KAROO
A Considered Life
A line on a map is an accounting device. It tells us where one jurisdiction ends and another begins, and little else. It doesn’t tell us about the landscape. The light doesn’t change because a line was drawn through it. The quality of silence in a dry place doesn’t shift at the boundary. What actually shapes us, the horizon we grew up under, the particular weight of humidity or dust or rain, the sound a place makes when it’s quiet, moves across those lines without asking permission.
We are shaped this way more than once, most of us. A landscape that refuses to be decorated, dry, plainspoken, unphotogenic until we slow down enough to see what it’s actually doing, teaches us somethings a softer one never could. Then another place teaches something the first one hadn’t. Different light, different silence, different language. None of it cancels the others out.
We are not separate from landscape, watching it from the outside. We are landscape, still working out what it means to survive here. A shrub in dry ground doesn’t wish for more rain, it becomes the plant that doesn’t need it. A life does the same thing with whatever conditions its actually been given:this water table, this light, this loss, this move to somewhere unfamiliar. Thriving isn’t something imported from somewhere else. It is what a life becomes in the conditions it actually inhabits.
Karoo is the name for that practice, paying attention to what’s actually here, rather than performing what’s expected. In the writing. In the flowers. In a home, in a life still being assembled.
Bring what shaped you. We’ll find where it fits here.
